Geyser Mavericks WIN the Hei Matau Trophy!

10 Oct

The Geyser Hei Matau Trophy was contested over the weekend with High School Teams from Taupo, Tauranga Boys and Central Z's joining the Geyser Mavericks in the 2 day T20 tournament.

TBC set the standard with 3 comfortable round robin results to comfortably qualify for the Final. The Mavericks v Z's fixture became a key match to determine the other finalist with the Mavs prevailing after a disciplined bowling performance saw them requiring a modest 70 in their 20 overs to book their spot in the top 2. Central found their form in the 3rd v 4th play off setting a daunting target of 162 for the spirited Taupo team. However Taupo were certainly not to be outshone as they accumulated a respectable 131 in reply to suggest they have plenty to offer in the summer to come. The Final was again ball dominated as the usually aggressive TBC batting line up found the going tough against a disciplined Mavs attack. They battled to 94 for 5. Riley Kusabs, Liam Adams and Jonah Funnell were particularly accurate only conceding 21 runs for their combined 9 overs. The Mavs response was positive and the early going suggested a reasonably comfortable chase. But TBC were not going to make it easy. 58 for 1 was soon reduced to 83 for 6 as 5 quick wickets fell for only 25 runs. There was an air of tension as Jai Poonia and Jonah Funnell scratched and crawled their way to the target of 95 to secure the result and give the Mavericks their first taste of silverware.

Riley Kusabs continued to show his value with both ball and bat and was the Mavericks player of the weekend. Jonah's change to left arm spin was particularly pleasing the watch and you can already see the huge strides in his game from his stint at Hamilton Boys.

We are super grateful for TBC and Taupo for making the trip over each day to support this pathway tournament for our upcoming high school players. See you all next season!
