CRAIGS INVESTMENT PARTNERS GEYSER RESSIES 14/10/23 LAKELANDS 40-OVER CHAMPIONSHIP

Round 1 GEYSER CITY RESSIES Vs Central Academy Z’s (Ray Boord Park 3)

With new recruit Vishw Patel out with Covid and key batting all-rounder Dil Singh called up to Prems to cover a rash of unfortunate injuries and unavailabities in their squad Captain Matt Collier had a very bowling weighted side at his disposal for this match. It was therefore no surprise when winning the toss to invite the very young but talented Central Academy Z’s side into bat.

A wicket from the first ball of the match and then another early breakthrough was more than Jono Collier could have hoped for given his readiness for the game! The young Central team were not going to make it easy though and a 67 run partnership followed between Logan Hutchings and Harry Jones before our spin duo Gary Patel and Supreet Singh struck with a couple of wickets. Having just returned from a season in England Jones then stood strong for his team and showed his Premier class. His dismissal for 88 by Matt Collier allowed Geyser to make good inroads into the Z’s batting lineup wrapping up the innings in the 38th over for 168. This was pleasing considering it had looked like a target of 200+ was on the cards. All our bowlers contributed with Matt picking up the best figures with 3-23. The unluckiest bowler was Hayden Mitchell who bowled with usual fire but with not a lot joy when several opportunities were missed from his bowling.

In the chase the early loss of Manny Kumar had Geyser on the back foot therefore a solid partnership of 47 between Karl McKnight and Supreet Singh was just what was needed. Supreet was very strong with the cut shot before slashing one in the air to the fielder at point. A batch of wickets not long after (including that of Karl after battling to 39) left the team at 5-85. The unheralded Manpreet Singh and Jiten Manu put together a handy 28 run partnership including one lusty blow from Jiten but then the loss of shipper Matt Collier had the Geyser Ressies precariously placed at 120-7. Manpreet (“Preet”) continued to impress and a useful 26 run partnership with Hayden and took the total to a nervous 8-146 but within site of the prize. Newcomer James Burton (son of Geyser legend John Burton who was the only batsman still in the sheds left to bat) then defied the nerves and along with Preet took the team to victory with 11 balls to spare!

Thanks to the very young Central Z’s team for a real battle with all 11 of their players showing that they are up for senior cricket and the competiveness that comes with it. Heartwarming to see the game growing in Rotorua!
